DISEASE OF FINITUDE: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
the inaugural issue of the antilogos press fundraiser zine-series
Beloveds,
I am so excited to share with you the official open-call for Disease of Finitude, a fundraising zine of experimental micro-fiction inspired by the works of auteur David Cronenberg. Our confirmed authors at this point are: Selah Saterstrom, Clay McLeod Chapman, Richard Gavin, Heatherlie Allison, and Jim Horlock. I cannot wait to include your name amongst some of these absolutely iconic authors. Read all about the project below.
DISEASE OF FINITUDE is a small, curated zine of experimental, weird micro fiction inspired by the films and theories of auteur David Cronenberg. The title is born of Cronenberg’s quote regarding the inspiration for his film The Fly, where he proposes: “we’ve all got the disease [...] the disease of being finite”. His cinematic symbolic language is a rebellion against this disease of finitude: ipseity (selfhood) is problematized, challenged, and subverted by eidos (form) throughout his filmography. Nearly six decades of art have made him the pioneer and prophet of interstices of the body and its abjection, ecstasy, and Otherness. DISEASE OF FINITUDE is a collection of pieces inspired and inseminated by the strange effluvia of his work: birthing numerous disorienting, erotic, transgressive, and ferociously alive miniature missives of art.
This collection will be the inaugural project of antilogos press, a small, independent, supremely DIY zine series curated and edited by Sasha Ravitch and designed by Nathan Tucker. DISEASE OF FINITUDE will be available as a free, digital download e-zine with a suggested/requested donation to the listed charitable organization. It will also be available in an extremely limited physical copy with all proceeds donated to The Palestinian Museum and Florida Access Network in its efforts to preserve the cultural and creative legacy and stories of the Palestinian People, and to provide reproductive justice and gender affirming care to Floridians. Now is the time, more than ever, where story can carve a path of starlight from an ever-darkening sky.
Contributors to DISEASE OF FINITUDE will not receive monetary compensation for their piece, as this is a fundraising project, but they will receive a physical copy of the zine mailed to them.
Confirmed contributors as of this moment are: Selah Saterstrom, Clay McLeod Chapman, Richard Gavin, Heatherlie Allison, and Jim Horlock.
Guidelines:
All pieces should be under 500 words, with 350-400 as the sweet spot.
All pieces should be in Modern Manuscript Format (Shunn preferred) and attached as a PDF.
All pieces should be written as an experimental text. I am choosing to leave “experimental text” open to your interpretation.
Please do not include any descriptive information or byline on the first page. Attach the byline and a short (70 words or less, third person) bio on a separate page following your piece.
All pieces should be directly inspired by the work of David Cronenberg. You may choose to engage one film, or a themed series of films, or a character or setting from a film, or myriad other approaches, but the piece must be thematically appropriate and intentionally tailored.
Absolutely no Generative AI will be accepted.
Deadline for Submission: December 16th, 2024
Author Notifications: January 5th, 2025
Please email all submissions to sasha.ravitch@gmail.com, and CC sublimebeasts@gmail.com (to ensure no submissions are lost). In the subject line, please write: DISEASE OF FINITUDE SUBMISSION. There is no need for a cover letter in the body of the email, as it will be attached to the last page of your submission.
Long Live the New Flesh,
Sasha Ravitch
